From Proto-Slavic *pъtica, from Proto-Indo-European *peth₂- ("to fly"). Cognate with English feather, pen, Ancient Greek πέτομαι (petomai), πτέρυξ (pterux) (whence pterodactyl, archæopteryx, Greek φτερό (fteró), πτηνό (ptinó)), Latin petō.
