Perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *woǵʰlos, from Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ- (whence also ἔχω (ekhō, "I bear, bring")), with cognates such as Old Norse vagl. Compare also Old Armenian յոգն (yogn).
