As conservative outside groups spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to attempt to derail Chuck Hagel's nomination for defense secretary, it appeared Tuesday that they would fall short of their goal.
Mr. Hagel is expected to win confirmation in a Tuesday afternoon vote, after a bitter fight that played out in the halls of Congress as well as on the airwaves.
