An NYPD cop was shot in the neck Tuesday night after exchanging gunfire with a suspect outside a public housing project in Brooklyn, police and a witness said.
The wounded officer, who was not immediately identified, was expected to survive.
He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, according to the fire department and cops.
The city Emergency Medical Services were called to 370 Bushwick Ave. just after 9 p.m., between the Hylan Houses and the Bushwick Houses where the shooting took place, fire officials said.
A witness saw the officer and a partner pursuing two men shortly before the exchanged gunfire.
"The hurt cop kept yelling 'I got hit! I got hit!'" said Jenny Rios, weeping at what she had seen. "He was bleeding from the mouth. They tried to revive him, pressing on his neck, but he looked in bad shape. He looked critical."
Dozens of officers on the ground and in a police helicopter were hunting for the shooter, who sources said has a long criminal record.
