Between 80 and 100 protesters calling themselves activists of the Occupy movement marched from Copley Square through downtown, and rushed onto Dewey Square with signs and banners, briefly occupying the square before proceeding back toward Copley.
After a slow march that ended in a sprint, some protesters shouted âœWelcome home, Occupyâ as they reached the green space from which the protest group was removed from last month. Others planted a flag reading âœOccupy Boston at Dewey Square.â
The group started the demonstration at Copley Square at about 7 p.m.
Boston Police officers on bicycles and in cruisers followed the crowd, closed off streets and redirected traffic. Lieutenant Detective Robert Merner said the protesters would be allowed to remain on Dewey Square until 11 p.m.
But the protesters soon left the park and headed back toward Copley.
Protesters, including a few wearing masks, chanted âœ1,2,3,4, I declare a class warâ and âœbanks got bailed out we got tear gassedâ as they marched and carried an American flag and signs and banners. They included ones that read: âœWe are the 99 percent;â âœOccupying is not a crime;â âœOccupy Oakland, occupy everything;â âœWe are Oakland;â and âœStop the brutality.â
Marchers said they were in solidarity with the Occupy movement in Oakland, where protestors have clashed with police.
