Modern Family looks to laugh all the way to its fourth consecutive best comedy win at Sunday night's 65th Emmy Awards, while the drama Homeland and its leads aim to add to their 2012 wins.
At the ceremony, to be broadcast on CBS and hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, American Horror Story is up for a leading 17 awards total, including best miniseries or movie and lead actress in a miniseries for Jessica Lange. (The star won for supporting actress last year.)
Game of Thrones will vie for honors in 16 categories, including supporting actress (Emilia Clarke) and supporting actor (Peter Dinklage) in a drama, as well as the stacked category for best drama, where the HBO fantasy faces Homeland, Downton Abbey, House of Cards, Mad Men and buzzy Breaking Bad, which is on a lot of people's minds as it ends its acclaimed run on AMC next Sunday.
Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston will go for his fourth Emmy for playing Walter White against 2012 winner Damian Lewis (Homeland), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) and Jon Hamm (Mad Men), who's been nominated in the category six years straight but never won.
Co-stars Aaron Paul and Jonathan Banks of Breaking Bad are in the supporting-actor-in-a-drama field with Dinklage, Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire), Jim Carter (Downton Abbey) and Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) — Paul won in 2010 and 2012, Dinklage in 2011. And Maggie Smith looks for a second straight win for best supporting actress in a drama in a field that features Clarke, Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Morena Baccarin (Homeland), Christine Baranski (The Good Wife) and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men).
Like her co-star Lewis, Homeland star Claire Danes also is vying for a repeat win for lead drama actress against Connie Britton (Nashville), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), and first-time Emmy nominees Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Robin Wright (House of Cards).
In best comedy, Modern Family seeks to continue its dominance and faces competition from ratings juggernaut The Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock, Girls, Louie and Veep.
Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons is in the lead-comedy-actor field with fellow two-time winner Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) as well as Louis C.K. (Louis), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) and Jason Bateman (Arrested Development).
Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Veep defends her crown for lead comedy actress vs. Laura Dern (Enlightened), Lena Dunham (Girls), 2010 winner Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), 2008 honoree Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation).
A three-time winner in the category for supporting actress in a comedy, Julie Bowen is in a field with her Modern Family co-star Sofia Vergara, plus first-time nominee Anna Chlumsky (Veep), 2010 winner Jane Lynch (Glee), Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) and Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie).
Modern Family's Ty Burrell goes for his second win for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy alongside co-stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ed O'Neill, Adam Driver (Girls), Tony Hale (Veep) and departing Saturday Night Live cast member Bill Hader.
American Horror Story squares off in the outstanding miniseries or movie category with the HBO films Behind the Candelabra and Phil Spector, The Bible, Political Animals and Top of the Lake.
For lead miniseries actress, Lange competes with Laura Linney (The Big C), Helen Mirren (Phil Spector), Elisabeth Moss (Top of the Lake) and Sigourney Weaver (Political Animals), while the contingent for lead actor includes Behind the Candelabra pair Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, Benedict Cumberbatch (Parade's End), Toby Jones (The Girl) and Al Pacino (Phil Spector).
James Cromwell and Zachary Quinto of American Horror Story lead the field for outstanding supporting actor in a miniseries with Scott Bakula (Behind the Candelabra), Peter Mullan (Top of the Lake) and John Benjamin Hickey (The Big C). American Horror star Sarah Paulson is in the supporting-actress-miniseries category alongside Ellen Burstyn (Political Animals), Charlotte Rampling (Restless), Imelda Staunton (The Girl) and Alfre Woodard (Steel Magnolias).
Project Runway's Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, winners last year in the category of outstanding reality host, defend against Tom Bergeron (Dancing With the Stars), Anthony Bourdain (The Taste), Cat Deeley (So You Think You Can Dance), Ryan Seacrest (American Idol) and Betty White (Off Their Rockers). Up for the best reality-show Emmy are The Amazing Race (which, with nine wins, has only lost once in the history of the category), Project Runway, Dancing With the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef and The Voice.
The video service Netflix could make history if House of Cards wins best drama or Spacey, Wright or Bateman are honored in their lead categories — it would be the first Emmy to go to a show not aired on a traditional broadcast or cable network.
