From Proto-Germanic *mēkijaz. Cognate with Old Saxon māki, Old Norse mækir, Gothic 𐌼𐌴𐌺𐌴𐌹𐍃 (mekeis) (only attested in inflected forms; borrowed into Slavic: see e.g. Russian меч (meč) or Serbo-Croatian mač Czech, Slovak and Slovene meč).
