From an earlier *bōkō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵos. The Indo-European root is also the source of Greek φηγός 'oak', Latin fāgus 'beech', Russian бузина 'elder-tree', Armenian բոխի (boxi, "hornbeam").
