Chicken Little is alive and well writing editorials for The Sun ("The GOP sequester," Feb. 22). The world will apparently come to an end when the sequester, better known as budget cuts, goes into effect on March 1. These budget cuts are apparently far more serious than the $1 trillion dollar annual deficits that we are piling on our children and grandchildren.
The Sun's solution, other than to continue its never-ending campaign against Republicans, is to reduce spending where you can and tighten the belt gradually — ease the pain. Great solution. Now let's look at President Barack Obama's and the Democratic party's proposed budget cuts. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid? Nope. That's not "fair." Domestic discretionary spending? Nope. It's not fair and it may get us in trouble with public employee unions. The military? Nope. It would hurt our national security and besides, we have too many defense contractors in Maryland with jobs being lost.
Instead, their solution is to start the tax-of-the-month club. An increase in the payroll tax, $600 billion in taxes on the wealthy, and additional taxes due to Obamacare that went into effect in January are not enough to satisfy the tax cravings in Washington. So please, folks at The Sun, tell us where we can cut spending. If you have any sensible and concrete proposals, please tell your friends at the White House and the Democratic Party Caucus about them.
If not, shut up about Republicans. We need more solutions and fewer partisan shills.
