CAMBRIDGE - Authorities say a report of a gunman walking into a building on the MIT campus was unfounded, and there is âœno threat to public safety.â
At 10:19 this morning, police in Cambridge posted on Twitter that the âœscene is clear.â
It was unclear whether the initial report, which forced the MIT campus into lockdown, was a hoax.
The report described a man with a long rifle and body armor walking into a building on the campus and prompted a massive police response.
At 7:30 a.m., the Cambridge police posted there was a âœpossible person with gunâ on Massachusetts Avenue. Ten minutes later, police closed Massachusetts Avenue, which runs through campus, from Vassar Street to the bridge over the Charles River.
On its website, MIT advised people to stay indoors.
Shortly before 9 a.m., MIT sent two emergency alerts via text message.
âœMultiple law enforcement agencies on campus in response to a report of a person with a gun on campus, further info on the Emergency Web Page,â the messages read. âœReport suspicious activity to campus police dispatch.â
MIT police will continue to monitor the campus, a message read.
Around 10 a.m., police appeared to be clearing the scene near Vassar Street.
