Etymology

From the same stem as gaišs ("bright, light"): Proto-Baltic *gīd- (with an extra syllable -ro), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰəid-, *gʷʰīd-, *gʷʰid- ("bright, shining"). Cognates include Lithuanian giẽdras, gaidrùs ("bright, clear"), Ancient Greek φαιδρός (phaidros, "bright, clear, happy").[1]
