From Dutch mandorijn or Portuguese mandarim, mandarij, from Malay menteri, manteri, from Hindi mantri [Devanagari?], from Sanskrit मन्त्रिन् (mantrin, "minister, councillor"), from मन्त्र (mantra, "counsel, maxim, mantra") + -इन् (-in, "an agent suffix").
