Shots were fired outside the U.S. Capitol after an apparent car chase that started when a woman tried to ram a security barrier near the White House, putting the Hill temporarily on lockdown in a chaotic scene Thursday afternoon.

According to U.S. Capitol Police, officers are injured. One person could be seen being carried off in a stretcher.

The lockdown has since been lifted, and those inside the Capitol are no longer being ordered to "shelter in place."

Senior congressional staffers and one eyewitness told Fox News the incident began with a car chase, which came to a stop near the Capitol building. Sources said several police cars were in pursuit. When they boxed in the other vehicle, the driver got out and five or six shots were fired, sources said.

Witnesses saw a baby being taken from the car.

Sources said the chase started when a woman tried to ram a gate near the White House.

The developments come as lawmakers were debating a series of small spending bills, amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.

The violence follows the mass shooting last month at the Washington Navy Yard.

Fox News' Carl Cameron and Chad Pergram contributed to this report.
