撒菱: a pair of caltrops

Etymology[edit]

Compound of  (maki, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, "stem form") of verb 撒く (maku, "to scatter, to cast, to sow")) +‎  (hishi, "a water chestnut; the rhomboid shape of a water chestnut; a caltrop"). The hishi changes to bishi due to rendaku (連濁).
