Race favorite Orb took the lead midway through the stretch to win the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs.

Sent off at 5-1, Orb passed Normandy Invasion in the stretch and held off longshot Golden Soul to give veteran trainer Shug McGaughey his first victory in the Run for the Roses. Ridden by Joel Rosario, the 2013 Florida Derby champion finished in 2:02.89.

Golden Soul placed second at 34-1, with Revolutionary third and Normandy Invasion fading to fourth.

Revolutionary, ridden by three-time Derby winner Calvin Borel, was the second choice at 6-1.
