Etymology[edit]

From French zaptieh, from Ottoman Turkish ضبطيه (zaptiye, "policeman"), from Arabic ضبطيه (ḍabtīyah, "policeman").

Noun[edit]

zaptieh (plural zaptiehs)

  1. A Turkish policeman.
    The zaptieh was of the opinion I could do no better than pay my respects to the Bishop of the Greek Orthodox Church.
