As for the category, they seem to be an odd assortment of words from Old English and Old Norse with different morphological origins. Another example might be [[blessed]], which is pronounced as two syllables only in poetic and religious (i.e. archaic) usage (in poetry it's also spelled [[blessèd]]). That one is from Old French.
