[edit] English

Part or all of this entry has been imported from the 1913 edition of Webster's Dictionary, which is now free of copyright and hence in the public domain. The imported definitions may be significantly out of date, and any more recent senses may be completely missing.

[edit] Etymology

From Middle English, from Old French matrone, Latin matrona ("married woman"), from mater ("mother")

[edit] Pronunciation

[edit] Noun

matron (plural matrons)

  1. A mature woman; a wife or a widow, especially, one who has borne children; a woman of staid or motherly manners.
    • Shakespeare
Your wives, your daughters, Your matrons, and your maids.
  2. A housekeeper; especially, a woman who manages the domestic economy of a public institution; a head nurse in a hospital; as, the matron of a school or hospital.

[edit] Welcome

Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
  • Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including. There is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! --Mglovesfun (talk) 11:19, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Altaic and Korean

I noticed you've been adding etymologies to some Korean entries, including etymologies in Altaic. Altaic is a hypothesis that hasn't yet been agreed upon by linguists. The consensus on Wiktionary is that we should not add any Altaic etymologies to entries. I'm also not sure what 'Proto-Korean' is, since Korean is a language isolate I don't know what its 'common ancestor' would be. So could you please remove those etymologies? —CodeCat 17:02, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

All language families are hypotheses and there can never be absolute certitude. However, Altaic has plenty of evidence which I think should be documented here. Who decided that Altaic is somehow inferior to any other linguistic theory? Why can't it be on here? Also, Korean is not a language isolate, there used to be a few Korean languages (i.e. Silla) which descended into modern Korean and the Jeju dialect. And of course, Korean is part of Altaic, so once again it's not an isolate.

Again, I ask you, why should this linguistic evidence be ignored, especially when I have sources and I am documenting them on the pages I'm editing? —And_we_drown

I'm just speaking for community consensus, I have no personal opinions on this. The community has agreed to not allow Altaic etymologies, since the category Category:Altaic languages failed a request for deletion. There is also a short discussion in the Beer Parlour about this topic, with the same conclusion. If you disagree you can continue that discussion. —CodeCat 17:13, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Could you direct me to that discussion in the Beer Parlour? It would be much appreciated. —And_we_drown

It's at Wiktionary:Beer parlour#Altaic languages. —CodeCat 17:20, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Miyako Language Sources?

Hi there. I'm curious on where you got some Miyako words from. Besides, I think it's courteous to let others know about what languages you excel in with a user page of your own. --Lo Ximiendo (talk) 08:29, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
