From Proto-Germanic *hailagaz ("holy, bringing health"), from Proto-Germanic *hailaz ("healthy") (English whole). Cognate with Old Saxon hēlag, Dutch heilig, Old High German heilag (German heilig), Old Norse heilagr (Danish hellig, Swedish helig), Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌻𐌰𐌲𐍃 (hailags).
