A calque of the Mandarin phrase 走狗 (zǒugǒu) (literally "running dog"; similar terms include 狗腿子 and 狗腿), often used as an insult by the communist government of the People's Republic of China against nations perceived to be in thrall to "imperialist" powers such as the United States

  1. Lackey; an unprincipled person who helps or flatters other, more powerful and often evil people; similar in this sense to the English word lapdog.
