Democrats in 1st debate since latest Weiner sexting scandal spar during NYC ... - Washington Post

NEW YORK — The Democratic candidates for New York City mayor are holding their first debate since Anthony Weiner's (WEE'-nurz) latest sexting scandal upended the race.

The Tuesday evening debate comes with less than a month remaining until the Sept. 10 primary.

Weiner was leading the field until he revealed last month he continued to send sexually explicit online messages to women even after resigning from Congress in 2011 for similar behavior.

He's now polling fourth. He trails Public Advocate Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh), City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and ex-Comptroller Bill Thompson. Comptroller John Liu (loo) is fifth.

The latest Quinnipiac (KWIHN'-ih-pee-ak) University poll finds de Blasio is the choice of 30 percent of likely Democratic voters. If no candidate reaches 40 percent in the primary, the top two advance to a runoff.

Two more televised debates are planned.
