Biden to Harkin's Iowa steak fry - Politico
Aug 11th 2013, 23:49

In the latest sign that he's laying groundwork for a 2016 run, Vice President Joe Biden will speak next month at one of Iowa's biggest Democratic event of the year, an aide said Sunday.

Biden will speak at Sen. Tom Harkin's annual autumn steak fry, an fundraising event at which the state's Democratic activists mingle with those vying for their attention in the state's first-in-the-nation caucuses.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, who earned a prime speaking spot at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, will also speak at the Sept. 15 event near Des Moines.

The trip to Iowa is just the latest in Biden's moves to place himself in the 2016 discussion. He spoke at a dinner for the South Carolina Democratic Party in Columbia in May and is expected to travel to New Hampshire to raise money for Democrats there this summer.

In 2007, six presidential contenders appeared at Harkin's steak fry: Biden, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, John Edwards and Bill Richardson. Next month will mark the event's 36th year. Harkin is not seeking a sixth term in 2016.

The New York Times first reported that Biden would appear at Harkin's event.
