===Etymology===

The word was first created by Billy DeBeck in 1919, when he created the comic strip characters [[Barney Google]] and Snuffy Smith. Decades later, dolls with eyes that rolled in their heads were referred to as googly-eyed, which probably derived from the song, [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOHg5uuZjwY Barney Google], recorded on Edison Disc in 1923 by Billy Jones and Ernest Hare. The company, Google, was named after a mispelling of [[googol]], one followed by a hundred zeros, supposed to indicate that the site wants to provide a huge amount of information, which itself was a misspelling of the original word.
