::: The order of the wikilinks within the page source code doesn't actually matter. The mediawiki configuration mentioned above causes the software to rearrange all the interwiki links into the given order, independent of the order in which they were given on the page. So we could (and IMO should) order the interwiki links within the page source by language code. {{User:CodeCat/signature}} 22:08, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

:::: It doesn't cause the software to display the links in the right order; it tells bots (and humans who care to look at it) what order to sort interwiki links in. If human sort one way and bots sort another, the links will be out of order until the bot comes along and sorts them again. Then no one will ever know where to find anything, because there's no knowing whether the page you're looking at had its interwiki links last sorted by a human or a bot. —[[User:Angr|'''An''']][[User talk:Angr|''gr'']] 22:12, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

::::: I just tried it out and you're right... I'm rather surprised! In any case though, we can't rely on anything being 'universal'. Interwiki links are necessarily a point where different practices across Wiktionaries will clash. There isn't really much we can do about that. All we can do is choose what fits best for us. {{User:CodeCat/signature}} 22:17, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
