BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The investigation continues into what caused the fatal collapse of a flight display board Friday afternoon at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport that killed a 10-year-old boy, and injured his mother and two brothers.

The collapse occurred in the newly renovated terminal -- Concourses A and B -- which opened March 13 as the first of a two-phased project to upgrade the airport to post-Sept. 11 security standards and expand visitor amenities.

Birmingham Airport Authority officials said Saturday their inquiry includes discussions with contractors and subcontractors on the project.

The project team for the $201.6 million modernization project is comprised of the following entities:

Owner: The Birmingham Airport Authority

Architecture and engineering: A joint venture of KPS Group and KHAFRA.

KPS Group began in 1965 and now has offices in Atlanta, Birmingham and Huntsville, and is known for its expertise in specialized buildings according to the company's website.

KHAFRA is based in Atlanta and has several regional offices, including one in Birmingham. The company was established in 1986 and has provided architectural and engineering consulting services for municipal, industrial, environmental, federal, corporate and commercial clients, according to the company's website.

Project manager: A.G. Gaston Construction Co., which provides "work-in-place, state-of-the-art cost and schedule controls, improved coordination, and superior documentations and defense against claims," the airport authority's website states.
Founded in 1984 by the famous powerful entrepreneur who is the company's namesake, A.G. Gaston Construction also lends "architectural, engineering and contracting expertise that helps owners optimize cost and quality and avoid profit-eating pitfalls and delays," according to the airport authority's website.
Construction managers: A joint venture between Brasfield & Gorrie and Bloc Global Services Group.

Brasfield & Gorrie provides "full-service general contracting, construction management and design/build service," the authority's website states.

The company was founded in 1964.

The website describes Bloc Global as a real estate development services firm that provides "master development, fee development, program construction management and investment services to public and private sector clients."

Bloc Global formed in 2009, as a successor to real estate development firm Formation Methods, which was formed in 2003 by an investment banker and a licensed architect with years of experience.
