From {{etyl|enm}} {{term|breed|lang=enm}}, from {{etyl|ang}} {{term|bread|brēad|fragment, bit, morsel, crumb", also "bread|lang=ang}}, from {{proto|Germanic|braudan|cooked food, leavened bread|lang=en}}, from {{proto|Indo-European|bherw-||bhrew-|to boil, seethe|lang=en}} (see {{l|en|brew}}). Alternate etymology derives ''bread'' from *''braudaz'', *''brauþaz'' ("broken piece, fragment"), from {{proto|Indo-European|bʰera-|to split, beat, hew, struggle|lang=en}} (see {{l|en|brittle}}). Perhaps a conflation of the twain. Cognate with {{etyl|sco|-}} {{term|breid||bread|lang=sco}}, {{etyl|fy|-}} {{term|brea||bread|lang=fy}}, {{etyl|nl|-}} {{term|brood||bread|lang=nl}}, {{etyl|de|-}} {{term|Brot||bread|lang=de}}, {{etyl|da|-}} {{term|brød||bread|lang=da}}, {{etyl|sv|-}} {{term|bröd||bread|lang=sv}}, {{etyl|is|-}} {{term|brauð||bread|lang=is}}.
