Etymology[edit]

A borrowing from Old East Slavic убогъ (ubogŭ) ("poor") (cf. Old Church Slavonic убогъ (ubogŭ, "beggar"), and also Russian убогий ("very poor; crippled")), first attested in 17th-century dictionaries. The basic Slavic stem of this word is the same as in nabags (q.v.).[1]
