Wright, Jr.), was a cotton picking Negro." I don't think the cite supports the definition, nor that other cites can by found to support the definition. "Cotton-picking" is a general purpose, sometimes pejorative intensifier. In this quotation, it might be taken as literal or to indicate a "field" Negro, rather than a "house" Negro.
