Three midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy were charged Wednesday in connection with the serial sexual assault of a female midshipman last year, the academy said.
The midshipmen, who were not identified, have been charged in the military justice system with sexual assault and with making false official statements, an academy spokesman said in a statement.
The case stems from an encounter at an off-campus party in 2012 between several academy football players and a female midshipman. In recent interviews, the midshipman said that she had been intoxicated at the party and began to black out, and could remember only brief moments of what happened. At first she declined to cooperate with Navy investigators, but later decided to cooperate, even agreeing to secretly record conversations she had with the football players under investigation.
