From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ak-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ- ("eye; to see").

Baltic cognates are Lithuanian akìs, Latvian acs and Old Prussian ackis.

Indo-European cognates include Latin oculus, Sanskrit अक्षि (ákṣi), Ancient Greek ὄσσε (osse), Old Armenian ակն (akn), Gothic 𐌰𐌿𐌲𐍉 (augō) and English eye.
