A plane full of passengers overshot a runway, hit the sea and split in two – but miraculously there were no serious injuries.

The Lion Air 737 had been attempting to land at Ngurah airport on the Indonesian island of Bali when the accident happened.

Survivors swam for the shore or were plucked to safety by rescuers paddling surfboards.

Forty-five of the 172 passengers and crew were taken to hospital, but only seven needed to be treated for wounds and fractures after the twin-engined plane, said to be just two months old, plunged into the ocean.

The jet's broken fuselage could be seen in shallow waters, with passengers screaming in panic from inside. But rescuers who raced to the scene found their access to the wreckage blocked by huge concrete barriers, put up to stop the coastline eroding.

They grabbed holidaymakers' surfboards and paddled out to the plane to rescue passengers, who had escaped through the plane's emergency doors. They were treated for shock at the airport's terminal buildings.

Bali plane crash Crash landing: The plane in the sea

One injured passenger, called Dewi, said: "The aircraft was in landing position when suddenly I saw it getting closer to the sea and finally it hit the water.

"All of the passengers were screaming in panic, in fear they would drown. I left behind my belongings and went to an emergency door. I got out of the plane and swam before rescuers jumped in to help me."

Bali officials last night ordered an investigation into the cause of the crash, which happened yesterday morning. Lion Air is currently banned from flying in the European Union because of concerns over its safety standards.
